hey guys I've got a 25' skipjack with a 350 penta and the 280 outdrive. I was cruising at 3500rpm when my anchor came loose and started paying out line that I was going to run over and foul. I did an emergency stop, I.E. I slammed it back into neutral, (possible hit a touch of reverse, but not much). The engine quit as I keyed it off. When I went to restart it:
A sound that I can only describe as a coffee grinder (or some kind of electric motor spinning at high RPM)
I switched it to Key OFF
The noise continued...until I switched battery selector switch to OFF
I switched the battery ON to see if the starter was running away, but that did not seem to be the case...and I still couldn't find the cause of the noise.
Turned everything OFF and I let the situation sit for half an hour to cool off for good measure.
Turned battery ON, noise continued, tried to start a few times(normally it starts on first turn). Then the noise stopped, and I hit the key again and it started. Idled great, ran great all the way straight home
Any ideas as to what that noise was? I'm pretty new to this boat, and inboard engines, but no stranger to turning wrenches on cars. All I can say is that the noise sounded mechanically bad.
