Volvo Penta 4.3 Cobra SX Identification Help (Yet Another)

Hello,

I bought a 1996 Celebrity 190 a couple of years ago. It has a 4.3L Engine with a Volvo Penta Cobra SX Outdrive. I've been learning about boating and boat maintenance and repair through this boat, trying to have fun with the family on the weekends in between. It's a good enough boat, was fairly priced, but...lots of little problems. I've read a ton of information on here and other places (very very helpful posts and archives here - thank you!) but now, without knowing exactly what I have, I'm at the limit of my ability to continue the repairs.

So, can someone please help me identify my engine/outdrive? The engine is a 4.3L GM block, original engine was replaced due to freezing and this block has no identification markings whatsoever on it. I have checked with mirrors, inspection cams, all the usual places. The entire engine is painted black if that means anything, it has Vortec heads with bolts in the center of the valve covers,a 12 bolt intake manifold and a Holley 4160 carburetor. My best guess as to what this might be is a 4.3GSPxxx but I keep striking out on certain things like power steering pump brackets, belts, switches, etc. Right now I am trying to solve an acceleration issue (WOT is fine but boat won't pull hard at all - pretty sure it's not a prop issue) and am rebuilding the carb. I need to know the float settings for the carb and the initial timing for the engine (I have the Volvo timing shunt).

The outdrive is a Volvo Penta Cobra SX 1.66 ratio. The ID plate on the side of the lower unit says "Prod No 3868160, Type SX-C, Ratio 1.66, Ser No. 4112013939", however the plate on top of the transom inside the boat says "Prod No 3868404, Type SX-C1, Ser No 4111535366". I realize this boat could be cobbled together from many different things, but how can I tell if I have a "C" or a "C1" SX drive? Does it matter? Is the only difference the 3 wire trim sender? What manual do I need to get? I'm looking to drop the outdrive and replace all the rubber bits including, unfortunately likely, the transom seal. I am also trying to fix the leaking power steering actuator and there are a few different ones listed on the Volvo EPC.

My next step is to get the proper manuals, but right now I can't determine what to get over at boatinfo.no. My life is complicated because I live nowhere near a solid marina so all my repairs parts and tools are either mailorder or involve a long long drive.

Thank you all very much.

Originally, there was a sticker on your thermostat housing and possibly the drive that would contain the model number.

For a 96 it would look like 4.3GLPNCD or something like that. The NC defines it as a 96. If those 2 letters were HU it would be a 95. Those 2 letters tell you what manual you need.

You might be able to bring the serial numbers to a Volvo dealer and have them look up what model number you have or at least get the correct year.

Thanks for the help. I'm not sure exactly what year the engine is/was or what the replacement (longblock?) is trying to be, is there any way to tell between the HU, LK and NC engines? There seem to be nuances in the EPC but I'm tiring of ordering and returning parts...

Doesn't the Holley 4160 make it a GS as opposed to a GL or did I get that wrong?

I can not figure out the correct manual over at boatinfo - can you point out the correct one? Sorrry for the handholding here...

Thanks again.

Your best bet is to talk to a Volvo dealer with your serial numbers.

I think you are correct concerning the GS/GL designation. GS is 4bbl.

OP - I have the same vintage motor with a Holley 4160 4bbl and an SX-C1 outdrive. Mine is a 4.3GS PNCA and I use the NC manuals for everything. Hope this helps but like Bruce said best bet is to talk with a Volvo dealer.

Thanks for the help guys - I'll head down to the dealer next time I'm in 'town' ;) I've been using the NC nd LK as references but I keep bumping into little things that don't match up but it could be some homebuilt fixes from the PO as well.
