Volvo Penta 4.3 GL engine temperature too low?

I recently purchased a new boat and after taking it out for the first time i noticed that the temperature gauge shows about 100F even after the engine ran for a while.

I did some troubleshooting by running the boat on the ear muffs and after 10 min of idle the temp gauge moved slightly above 100F. So then I turned the water down and i noticed the temperature increasing a little bit. I shut the engine of before temp reached 110-120F not to damage anything.

That test makes me think that this is a faulty thermostat (stuck open:confused:) however I'm not 100% sure. Is there any other way to tell what the issue is? Is there a way to check the engine temp sending unit? (I'm assuming its the thing screwed into the thermostat housing with one wire coming out of it). I unplugged that wire and turned the key into on position put the gauge still showed 100F.:confused:

Thanks

Thomas

See you dealer, otherwise why would you pay so much for a new boat and not utilise his help?

Don, surely I did see the date on this question. I answered the question for those who just got a new boat and took it out for the first time to find a problem like this. Otherwise, why would one keep this question around for five years?

We don't delete posts because they don't get answered..

Glad to know we now have someone to state the obvious on old un-answered posts.
