I have a 1998 Reinell 197 with a Volvo Penta 5.0 GL stern drive. I recently purchased this boat after it was sitting unused for a year.
I went out for a test cruise and noticed the engine temp was running hot (190-200f) at about 3600rpm's. After about 20 mins cruising the engine lost power and stalled. There was a burning smell and the engine would not even crank over.

Before launching I had checked fluid levels (oil, transmission fluid, etc) and ran idle on the hose to make sure water was passing thru the engine.
I think it might be an impeller but really no idea?
:(

Will the starter turn the engine over or does it appear to be seized? Did you notice the oil pressure before the engine stalled?

Thanks for the response.
I brought the workshop manual for the volvo penta stern drive and diagnosed the problem myself. Turned out to be a number of issues...
1. throttle was jammed open. spray of liquid screwdriver repaired this.
2. Spark plugs were worn out - little spark.
3. Impeller needed replacement to prevent over-heating.
Thanks again
