Hi Everyone,

I'm hoping someone could educated a newbie (me) on my Volvo Penta 5.0 GXi 270.

1. Should I be concerned that my engine's temp has gone over 150F? I ask because my operating manual says that my temp should be at 150F (assuming I have a RAW water cooled system - again I'm a newbie). I took the boat out for the first time (New Cobalt 220 w/Volvo Penta GXi). And put it's first two hours on it. In watching the temp I noticed it went anywhere from 154 to 169. Should I be worried?

2. When I store the boat should I store the boat with the stern down or up? Stupid question as the manual says I should always have the stern down unless I'm trailing or need to work on the stern drive. I see a lot of boat leave their stern drives up at the storage facility I use.

As a new boater to this size of an engine and stern I'm worried about the temp and the location of the stern drive when parked/stored. Am I being paranoid?

For the first question - I will move this to the proper section ;)

The second........ while moored I like to leave the outdrive down........ I consider it "user's choice"

Okay where do you moor your boat? It would take a HUGE amount of freezing to be concerned and if the outdrive is submerged it will not freeze if it is only a small amount of ice on the waters surface

1. Your temp will vary it will never stay at exactly 150. Also most boats have analog gauges so where as in a car the temp gauge has a buffer that keeps the needle from moving toouch on a boat you will most likely see every change in temp. As for the proper temp it's not uncommon for someone to stick a thermostat from a car in to the boat motor. Cars run hotter than boats. You can order one that you know is a proper marine one and swap it out.

2. Store with the out drive down. Less stress on the bellows. Just remember to put it up before you trailer the boat.

Best I can tell the OEM thermostat is 160*F (70*C) so running anywhere between 150* and 170* should not be a problem.

Thanks for the replies! This site is great..now I just need to learn all the proper terminology - It's like learning a new language.

I'll be going to the storage site to lower the drive down and not worry about the temp. The Temp is a digital gauge which I'm not use to so that is probably why I was worried.

You should be running at 160 temp wise. Always keep the drive in full down when at all possiable. It keeps the bellows from getting a memory and premature wear. If left in the water more important to keep down. This helps to keep out any debris that might get lodged back there.
