Volvo Penta 5.0 SX Gear lube replacement

I have a 1995 Four Winns with a Volvo Penta 5.0 SX. I am planning on draining and refilling the gear lube in the lower end. I do not have a manual. I am not sure which screw is the vent screw. I drained it and removed the upper screw on the same side but as I tried to refill the gear lube it built up pressure and when I removed the pump on the bottom it squirted out. I have done this on a merc and have not ran into this problem before. Am I doing something wrong? Could there be some sort of blockage?
