Did a little searching but could not find the answer... Looking at a Glastron 249 with a 5.0. It may have engine problems, but the price is very right. Can I use a junkyard GM block if I have problems and just add the marine items or is the block not a GM 305?

Ayuh,.... Where's the distributor,..??

dependin' on it's Vintage, it could be a SBC, or a 302 Ford.....

But to answer the basics of yer question, Ya boat motors start out as truck long blocks, 'n each manufacturer dresses 'em with their accessories...

I believe a 305 GM block is a 305 GM block. Some of the internals are different and some of the externals are different but the physical block is the same.

If it's in-fact a GM Block and you're getting a used motor, look for a 96-98 Truck or 96-99 Tahoe, Suburban (Chevy/ GMC) 5.7 Vortec Motor. Everything on the old motor will transfer over. Just double check the intake manifold. The 249 is pretty large for a 5.0. and you'll welcome the extra torque and HP of the 350 over the 305.

I currently own a 2005 glastron gs249 and its diffenently a gm305.(volvo penta 5.0 red engine)
Mine is carbed and if i had to replace engine, 5.7 vortec would give the extra HP needed. Its a great bay boat.

Until the OP comes back, this is pure guesswork. We don't know the year of his boat. Volvo-Penta and OMC used a lot of Fords (as well as GM) until Ford left the marine market in 1998 or 1999. Ford 302's and GM 305's were usually both labeled '5.0'.

If the distributor is at the rear of the motor, it's a GM. If it's at the front, it's a Ford.

Boat is a 1999. Not sure on the distributor since boat is not close to look at.

So if I have to do a motor replacement I can swap in a 350 or another 302 (if Ford dist is in front-correct) and just change out the marine parts like the water pump, risers, etc?

What out drive would the 1999 have come with since it needs a new boot.

Volvo used the Ford engines in the 94-MD model, 95-HU model, and the 96-NC model years.
After that Ford engines were never used by Volvo again.

Re: Volvo Penta 5.0 ?

You posted while I was typing, since you are looking at a 99 boat, the chances of it having a Ford are slim at best.

If you must replace the long block, going from a 5.0 GM to a 5.7 is a very easy change. Unless it's fuel injected. That could cause some problems, if carbed, no problem at all.

It is carb'ed (noticed that the other day). Any particular year series I should be after?

Do you know what outdrive series the 1999 used? I know it had dual props.

Get one of the same vintage, then you know everything will fit.

DP-S was the drive of that period.

Full model numbers or serial numbers is how you find out what things are for real, instead of just guessing.

just backing up a bit . . . How much do you know about the particular engine problems with this boat? Also wondering if you have done the economic analysis of fixing this boat versus just getting a boat with a good engine. All too often folks try to save money and it ends up costing more in the end.

Boat is in excellent shape. Owner bought a 34 foot and just let it sit. It is covered, lift stored - has not been run for two years. Owner said it ran when put away last, he told me the bellows is torn and they did replace a oil pan...making me suspect at worse case water got into the lower end of the motor at one time or another when it wasn't on the lift. Price was well under 4K as is, and for that I'll take a chance and it may run or I may have to put in a new motor at worst.

Re: Volvo Penta 5.0 ?

I stuck a GMC 350 Vortec out of a mid 90s pickup in mine. Then it turned out my shortblock was fine, so my buddy put that in his 98 Chevy truck, so yep, its the same. Any GM truck with a V8 in the mid 90s will work. Vans are the best because they are extremely cheap. For some reason pickups and SUVs bring more money. 305 and 350 are the same dimensions on the outside, so no problem there. You will likely need to use your camshaft from the boat engine. I had a problem with the cam endplate not fitting, but found one at a local auto parts store.

Not entirely sure you are going to find a decent truck engine for less than you can find a remanned boat engine. All the ones I found had a ton of miles and were top dollar. In the end, I found a rebuilt shortblock, then bought a set of heads off ebay. Cost me way more in the end than if I had just used one of the online venders and bought a remanned boat engine. Plus i would have had a warranty.

Depending on if you're willing to spend for one Mercruiser is offering a 3 year warranty on their Plus-Series remanned motors. Unlike other remans they're mostly new on the inside and all new parts on the outside of the block. See below video:

True - seems like it always goes this way
