Volvo Penta 5.0FL not taking in water after thermostat replacement

ok, so before I took out the thermostat I tested with the drive in the bin of water and it definitely drew it in and spit out.

so now I replaced the thermostat and it won't draw water. I even tried the muffs but it didn't spit it out so I assume its not drawing it in.

I see no leaks of water in the engine compartment.

What did I likely do to it that it won't draw water now?

I may be stating the obvious, especially since you mention running the drive in a bin of water, but Volvo Penta specifically cautions against running the engine without any water intake, not even for 20 seconds, because that is how little time it will take to burn up (melt) the impeller on the fresh water intake. Did you run the engine without water on the intake, even for a moment?

no, the intake should have been in the bin or had the muffs on the whole time while I was doing the testing.

I will add that I changed out the thermostat because a few days ago on the lake the boat heat went beyond the normal temperatures. After I shut it down and let it cool down it seemed to stay in the norm for the drive back to the dock.

When I ran it at home with water in the bin covering the intakes it seemed to suck it in fine and spit it out so I assumed that perhaps it was a sticky stat.

now I am at a loss why and obviously now have a problem with water being drawn in.

I suppose checking the impeller makes sense to confirm. I don't have the documentation for that job, is that an easy one to do?

See impeller in the photos. Think I need to worry about the missing pieces?

i would probably take off the t-sat housing again just to make sure there are no chunks sittin there. that impeller might have been your original problem.
