Hi All,

I have a 99 Striper boat with a Hi All,

I have a 99 Striper boat with a Volovo Penta 5.7GSI-PWTR that just wont start, cranks and cranks and sometimes tries to start.

Compression is 88lbs on the low, 120lbs on the high
Spark is there but seems kind of weak.
I've replaced the battery with a new one.
I've replaced the high pressure fuel pump, tried starting fluid and no difference.
I've replaced the electronic module under the distributor cap, no diff although its the auto equivalent.

Still won't start....

Prior to all of this the waterpump seal went out and sea water sprayed off the belts and all over the motor, I've since checked all connectors, wires etc and cleaned and coated with dialectric grease.

Any suggestions? ideas? too low compression? too weak spark?

Thanks,

Ayuh,...... I'm guessin' low compression,.... 88 lbs won't run a cylinder,.... 120 lbs is marginal, but runnable,....

Basic, 100 lbs is the bottom most line,.... 140 to 160 lbs is a new motor,....

A leak-down test will give ya an idea, whether it's bad valves, or bad rings,...

88 is pretty low! You might also want to try adding a little oil into the low cylinders and see if the compression comes up any and how much.

Since you believe you have weak spark maybe from the coil, be sure to search online of "how to test an GM ignition coil". There's lots of info with specs of how to do it.

Keep us updated and good luck.:)
