I am trying to remove and re-seat my transom plate on 1996 Larson. I've got the Volvo Penta 7.4GL and 290 DP-S.

Can I do this without pulling the engine?
The exhaust risers are bolted to the transom plate. There is absolutely no way (that I can figure out) to get those bolts off. Sandwiched in between the flywheel and exhaust riser. I'm not even sure that I can get a wrench on it.

Has anyone done this before?

Thanks.

Well, you listed two different drives there, but the fact is, it doesn't matter what drive you have. To remove the transom shield, you have to remove the engine first.

Thanks Don. You are correct, I did. It is DP-S transom assembly, and a DP-D1 lower unit.

I was afraid you were going to say that.

I had two things occur this season. A leaky input gear seal and a leaky U-joint bellows. (I just bought the boat, and the bellows were obviously long overdue.) I'll fix the input gear seal with a U-joint kit and seals. But I had both water and gear oil in the bellows when I removed them. (mostly gear oil) There isn't any rust to be seen. How much longer will I have on the intermediate bearing? (gimble bearing in merc terms I think)

It is DP-S transom assembly, and a DP-D1 lower unit.

Still two completely differnt types. The DP-S transom shield has a gimbal bearing, The DP-D1 drive does not have a gimbal bearing in the transom shield.

Post some pictures of your transom shield.

Ok, in the future, just call it a DP-D1, forget about the DP-S. In later drives, the DPS and DP-S are some thing different.

The engines flywheel cover goes through the transom shield, you need to remove the drive, remove the 6 bolts on the clamp ring and remove the engine and flywheel cover as a single unit, then you have to remove the exhaust Y pipe, then you can remove the transom shield.
No way can you leave the engine in.

Thanks for that info.

On this model, is there a bearing in the transom that I should be concerned about? Can it be replaced without pulling the engine?

What exactly is your problem that you are wanting to fix. You ask questions, but I'm not sure if what you are asking is going to fix it.

is there a bearing in the transom that I should be concerned about?

The transom is made out of wood and fiberglass. The transom shield is what you posted pictures of, and there are no bearings in either one.

Sorry about that. I am talking about two different projects. The first was figuring how to reseat the transom plate. The second was to try to figure out that if water entered the ujoint bellow, would there be damage to a bearing other than the uJoints. Thanks very much for your help and sorry about the confusion.
