I have a 2000 5.7L throttle body injected. It bogs on accel, like it is running out of fuel. You can spray it with carb cleaner and it picks right up. Any suggestions.

TMT - you don't need to start a new thread just bump yours up if you want.:) Your other had more details anyway.

I'm not familiar with fuel injection but it does sound like its not getting fuel. You'll have to troubleshoot it. Look in the adults only section for fuel system check.

One thing I was uncertain about was the part in your previous thread where you said with the key on, pumps were priming, I thought the pumps would not run unless the starter was engaged or the engine is running. Can you clarify? I ssume you checked your fuel filter/s and tank for moisture issues.

Can you just pour a bit of fuel into the throttle body and make it "pick right up?"

Re: volvo penta bogging?

Sorry I did not mean to repost. I never saw my first one appear. When you turn the key on, the fuel pumps run for 2 seconds. I did not try to dump gas in throttle body with it running, however when it starts to cut out, I can spray carb cleaner in throttle body and it picks right up. I changed the water fuel seperator filter, spark plugs, dist. cap, rotor, and even removed fuel feed hose from tank and put in a 5 gallon gas can of know good gas. Same condition. I have read a few posts, people talking about screens and filters, suction hose on tank, screen on fuel pump? Any thoughts, I need more detail, Thanks, Mark

just a thought but you might want to check the throttle possition sensor. it will bogg down if the computer doesnt know to send more fuel when the throttle is moved.....

Have you checked for any trouble codes in the system. Consistant malfunction with sensors should set trouble codes in the self diagnostics. I would bet that you have contaminated fuel though. I would pull a sample from the fuel rail test port, put it in a glass jar and let it sit. A quick test you can do to see if you have quantities of water.

Re: volvo penta bogging?

I have not hooked it up to a scanner to check for codes. I dont think it is bad gas because I stuck suction hose in a 5 gallon gas can with good gas and it did the same thing.

You dont necessarily need a "scanner" to retrieve codes. If your boat has some sort of engine light then the diagnostic link can be jumped to make the light flash a morse code type of sequence to you to indicate the code number. If it has no light (like my boat) then you will need to rig a led or purchase a code tool. This is definatly the place to start and much cheaper than throwing parts at it.

I have a 2000 model crownline 225br. Can you tell me where I might find the necessary information as far as which connector and which terminals to jump across. I have a clymers manual and did not locate anything in it as far as flashing the codes. Thanks for your help.

Re: volvo penta bogging?

My 5.7 tbi VP has a diagnostic connector taped to the harness near the ecm. I bought a inexpensive code tool that has a led and the code descriptions printed on it. It works great and I think it cost me less than 40 bucks. To make one you will need to know which pins in the connector need to be jumped and which pin will give you your pulsed voltage in the morse code I was describing. You will need a schematic.

Where did you buy your scanner? I have checked the anti siphon valve in tank and the pickup tube. No cracks, no debri. I am clueless at this point. I did take a fuel sample. The gas a darker tan color, however I dont if fuel stabolizor or sea foam will turn it a certain color or not. Somebody please help.

Re: volvo penta bogging?

Here is a update. I sucked all the gas out of the tank with an electric pump. Put 12 gallons of fresh gas in, went to the lake. Left the no wake zone and throttled up, boat picked up speed to 20 mph. Was cutting out some but not as bad as it was. Drove around for a while to allow new gas to burn through. Boat started running a little better and better, after driving around for about 20 minutes boat would run 35 on the speedo. If you throttle up all the way it feels like boat goes on a governor, if you back out of throttle some it picks up a little. My next step is to scan for codes. Is there any other suggestions.

The tool that I have is called codemate. I bought it online at rinda.com. I see that marinepartsexpress has the same tool for about 120 bucks but i paid about 40 and it is listed for 39.00 at rinda.

I received my new fuel cell assembly last night and installed it and headed to the lake. Boat is fixed, no more sputtering, coughing or anything, full throttle. Thanks for all the help. Mark

What's a "fuel cell assembly?" Is that a fuel pump? Thanks.

Re: volvo penta bogging?

Hey JoLin, TMT and I have been in touch over the past month about this issue. He and I have the same engine and have had the same the RPM issues. Volvo Penta has reengineered this thing at least two times since the engine was released, (fuel pump assembly -fuel cell- same animal) it consist of the fuel/water separator, the low pressure fuel pump, a small vapor chamber and the hi pressure fuel pump, all on one integrated unit. I just put my new fuel cell on last week and it seems to be the fix, I was out last night with the family and was under way for over three hours with no issues. Bad part about it is the price to replace the cell, around $700.00 on average. Freelancer.
