Volvo once used a V6 engine with the distributor in the front, pretty sure it's a Buick (Volvo Penta AQ150). But that is many years ago, late 1960's. My bet is that most marine parts for this engine is obsolete. I would recommend you to find another Ford V8. Marine parts for Ford are still available.

the buick V6 is a great motor (although questionable in a marine application), however not as good as the Ford V8. why on earth would you want to step backwards?

the difference is about 100hp less.

That rebuilt a Buick?

Eaton, Chrysler, Donzi, Glastron and a few boat builders used their own selected engines with the AQ series drives.
It's possible that someone used the Buick V-6 in front of an AQ drive.

This might be one of the "odd fire" engines. If so, close attention must be paid to the distributor installation, since the triggering is not equal between cylinders in terms of crankshaft angle/degrees.
I have no idea if a flywheel cover can be found for one.

If the Buick V-6 is Borg Warner capable, then it can be made to work with the B/W flywheel cover and a B/W... slash... Volvo Penta PDS adapter housing.

Personally, I'd not use one, and I'd stay with a more commonly used engine

you would be better off selling the V6 to someone that needs it for their OMC installation, and getting an SBC to put in front of the VP drive. you may actually come out ahead money wise.

If the OMC stringers actually work, they are worth their weight in gold for people that want spare parts
