I just finished winterizing my buddies boat with a Vovlo Penta GL4.3 and SX outdrive. I was really surprised at the cost of the Volvo gear oil................. or the lack of it lol.

This oil was $10 a ltr and it just got me thinking, as it is a outdrive "marine oil", could it not be used for a Aphla drive.

I think the correct quicksilver high performance gear oil is only $11.97 at walmart. The merc gear oil is pretty high tho. I dont know if vp oil has the same properties as the merc... i imagine it would work fine. Some is better than none.

Look up the chemical properties and see if their close enough for your comfort. Really, you would think the outdrives are not much different mechanically but who knows

Guys,

There is no "Marine" specification for the recommended GL-5 gear lubricant. You can use any Gear lubricant if it meets SAE GL-5 specifications.

Both Mercury (Mercury HP) and Volvo (Synthetic gear oil) suggest using synthetic gear lubricant in their drives.

Many here use Mobil 1 or other type synthetics (including Amsoil) in their Alphas, Bravos, Volvo and OMC drives.

Very few of the "marine" oils are actually "made" by the company indicated on the bottle.

Regards,

Rick

GL-5 without limited slip additives, to be more specific.

That may be true. Although no one has actually said that LS additives will hurt anything (except some LS additives are "reported to be corrosive to "yellow' metals.........and cone clutches for example are usually made of "yellow" metals!)

LS gear oils are SPECIFICALLY designed and recommended to be used in axles and transaxles.

.......I wouldn't intentionally put the stuff in any sterndrive however............
