Volvo penta low rpm

My friends Volvo Penta will not get over 3000 rpm. There is a beeping noise coming from the engine compartment. Is there a fail safe on this engine? The engine seems to idle ok so i have been told as he is still out on the ocean trying to get back to the dock. He says that all the gauges look to be normal. Good water temp and oil pressure. Any ideas would be appreciated. I am going down to the dock as of now to see whats up.

Just an up date.

The beeping noise is coming from an black modual. The beeping is two beeps together and then a pause. Is that a flash code #2.

check the oil pressure switch and the riser temp switches.

Then head to page 424 of the manual. It will explain how to check the sensors for engine protection mode.

Thanks Don as it looks like you pointed me in the right direction. I was going through those manuals last knight but as it happened I didn't down load that one.

We are going down tomorrow to see if we can find out what is up with it.

We found that the port side exhaust manifold sensor had shorted out causing the alarm to sound off. Hes going out to try it under operating conditions just in case the exhaust manifold has a problem but I think is just the sensor.
