I've got a 2004 Volvo Penta 3.0 GLP-C Engine with an SX outdrive. Manual says use ONLY Volvo Penta SAE 30W Full Synthetic in this engine.

Called down to the marina today to see if they had any of that specific oil in stock and they said "No. Volvo Penta no longer makes/ships 30W Full Synthetic. What they shipped us instead is Volvo Penta 10W40 Full Synthetic. So we are using that now."

I told them that my manual was very specific in using 30W only, and they said if they were to do the oil change, they would use what was shipped to them- the 10w40. I've searched the oil forums here and it seems as though engines are relatively tolerant of different oil, but I wanted to get everyone else's opinion.

Specifically,
1) Has anyone else had their marina tell you they Volvo Penta no longer makes/ships 30w full synthetic? Is my marina on crack?
2) Is 10w40 okay? (I'm sure the marina knows, but I hate going against what the manual specifically says).

I think you need to look at your manual again, here is what I just took from the owners manual for a 3.0GL-C
There is a chart that mentions the recommended grades, the 30W is the first one, but it does not say it's the only oil you can use.
It also mentions that 10W30 and 10W40 is not recommended unless you can't get 30 W, but the 20W50 grades would be a better choice.

Look at this link from Volvo http://www.volvopentastore.com/Synt...*****.913808017--store_id.366--view_id.345107

what do you suppose the difference, if any, between volvo penta brand oil and Valvoline, Mobile 1, etc, of the same viscosity?

I'm going to move this over to the non repair IO forum with the other kazillion "What Oil" threads.

Here are a few links to other oil threads to help assist you in choosing your oil.
They all come down to the same thing, people posting something like
"I use ___(Fill in the blank)___ and it works great"

The bottle and label.
Volvo isn't in the oil/refinery business. The oil came from some oil company, and was put in a Volvo bottle. Use what ever brand oil you are loyal to, and as long as it's specifications meet or exceed what Volvo requires, you can't go wrong.
