Attaching methods of the helmut to the outdrive vary between SOME 270's and 280's, the H bracket that mounts the drives to the transom shield are different on the 290's (along with the transom shield)
If you knew exactly which 270 you had, you might be able to replace the clamp ring on the upper gear box and reshim the double bearing box and gears and make it work, but you really need to know how to set up the gears to do that.
