Volvo-Penta Outdrive Identification

Looking through the forums, I have not found a link to serial number identification for Volvo-Penta outdrives, just engines so I will throw out my serial number and see if the experts can help. We need to get a rebuilt upper gearbox, swap it out of our boat we keep in Alaska, then send the core back in August after our annual trip. The serial number is 3102093409. We think it's a 290DP. It was sold to us new on 2/7/90. It is a 1.95 gear ratio but after reading the forums, I don't think the upper gears determine that. The outdrive is powered by a Volvo-Penta AQAD-41B diesel engine.

The problem with the outdrive is it won't go into/is slipping out of forward gear at near idle RPM. We suspect the cones are in need of deglazing or replacement. Once under a bit more RPM, the boat does fine, she just won't idle in forward gear which makes it difficult to troll.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Eric

Click on the small pic of the drive , then you can see the little red arrow pointing to the TAG on the outdrive.
If the drive is original to that engine it should be a DP-B or later, maybe a DP-C , shouldn't be a 290.
This chart helps ID drives, notice the difference between the DP-A , etc, and the 290's, top cover and back cover are totally different looking.
http://marinemechanic.com/volvo/volvo-home.htm click on the 2nd pdf link, : "VP Stern drive identification by picture,,,,,"

K-2, that is a bad link. I added an f to the end of "pd" but it still wouldn't open in adobe. Could you please repost? I think you are correct that we probably have a DP-A and the original invoice was incorrect. Just want to verify before I spend the $$ on a rebuilt upper. This is not the original drive that came with the engine. In fact, this is not the original engine either!

Strange, it works for me.
But I have a hard time posting links of this chart,,the web address is a PFD, it never seems to work. Just do a google search for : "Volvo Penta Sterndrive identification oil chart" This ID chart is in a few places but I have trouble linking it. It shows up a couple times on the first page of a google search.
It would make a good sticky for this forum.
Where in Alaska? I know a good Volvo guy in Juneau.
No tag on the drive?
Some people just have to add 290 to a DP-A , it just confuses things.

After looking at pics on google of DP-As and 290DPs, we think the dealer who sold us the outdrive didn't even know what he was selling us. It appears we have a DP-A and not a 290DP. So if anyone out there knows of someone with a rebuilt, please let me know. We can send the core back in September after we finish our annual trip. Our upper is in good shape other than glazing on the cones which causes it to hesitate going into forward gear at low rpm. Makes for challenging trolling for salmon but running to the fishin holes works fine.

Probably no help but I have a DP-B1 - 3102172095
and a DP-A - 3102075364
Your serial number falls between those two.

1:95 is a gas engine ratio, diesels are 1:78 , you are correct, the ratio change is in the lower unit.
A good Volvo Penta dealer can tell you exactly what your serial number means.
E-Bay has upper gear boxes .
