Volvo Penta Outdrive will not go into gear

Yesterday at the lake my 1995 Wellcraft 5.0FL 21 foot was running smooth...i made a left turn to pick up falling skiier and the back started vibrating really bad and then POP! I quickly went into neutral and the engine was still running smoothly. After a second i attempted to put into gear and nothing...the props would not turn either direction.

At shore i was turning the props by hand both directions with no noise or feeling of binding and grinding but when in gear they would only turn one directing and of course when in reverse it would only turn the other direction...please assist! Don S...where you at Sir??

Pull your outdrive off, and look at the ujoints, Once the drive is off, look throught the gimbal bearing at the splines in the coupler. Are they there?

Please don't hijack someone elses thread with questions on your boat, that is his thread.

Thank you for the info...did not mean to hijack his thread...just wanted him to know that it happened to me and that maybe if his was the same as mine we could figure something out...won't happen again!

I have attached 2 pictures of what i am working on...i am needing assistance getting that top bolt off so i can get the bello off and get a better look at the broken u-joint that I have. I have tried (with no success) serveral times to get this nut off the top but i am afraid something else is going to give before it does...should i be worried? Second...can i repair that u-joint with out taking the engine out or more items being taken apart? Thank you

Wow, you have some big problems coming. First of all, you DO NOT take that "Big bolt" loose so you can change the bellows, it's the vertical shaft. You really shouldn't have pulled the top cover, or the shift mechanism at this point.
Here is how you easily pull the upper gear box.

About the broken fork/u-joint (not sure what is broke), can it be fixed without engine removal?

At this point, I don't even know for sure what model drive you have. From the two closeup pictures you posted it's impossible to say what all is wrong. I sure wouldn't rule out an engine pull at this point. Way to early to tell.
Get the upper gear box off and take some more pictures.

As requested...my outdrive is a DP-C1. I removed those to bottom hex bolts and the top came right off..thank you. I am really not sure of whats next for this repair but i am one of those that likes to fix things and takes pride in what i am working on. Is this repair possible without engine removal?
