Hi i have a 1999 chris craft 240 express cruiser. I want to do a gear lube but have been told i need a special tool "puller" to get the 2nd prop off. I have to take the props off in order to get to the drain plug. Can someone let me know what exactly this tool is called and perhaps a link of where i can purchase one. Thanks. The engine is a Volvo Penta 5.7 I/O

Re: Volvo Penta Prop Puller?

You normally don't need a puller to remove the prop, only if it's been neglected by some moron....you do need a special socket, deeep-well with three notches cut out of rim...if you take outer prop off you will see another, much larger nut on inner prop with three ridges on it....also, it's a nylok nut, so don't use and impact much, or you'll burn(melt) the nylok plastic. If these props are neglected in saltwater, devil to get off, but i see you are in Atlanta, so should be no problem.

Re: Volvo Penta Prop Puller?

As mentioned, you don't need a prop puller to remove the prop unless it is frozen on the shaft due to lack of grease on the splines, but what you do need is the special wrench to get the 3 tabbed nut off. The wrench part number is 3855876 and you can get them at your local VP dealer.

Here is a link to the oem service manual, go to page 263 for details on how to R&R the props correctly.
