Does anyone know where I can get just the motor for my (2007 VP SX-A drive) trim unit? I searched all over the internet, including eBay and google but the only thing I found is the entire trim pump unit that has the motor, pump and reservoir. All I need is the motor. The cheapest I found was almost $600. The dealer wants over that.

The problem started because I washed the boat and got water in the trim switch on the shifter. Suddenly the drive (which was in the up position) tried to go up further. The switch had not been moved, so I wiggled it both up and down, stopping this involuntary operation of the unit. It didn't happen again with me present, but it must have occurred later because the motor quit.

I am a do it yourselfer, so I did what any good do it yourselfer would. Tear it apart to see what's wrong. I found the capacitor on the motor's circuit board was loose and not soldered to the board anymore. I soldered a new one in that I matched up at radio shack, cleaned everything and reinstalled it with no change. I tore it apart and unsoldered it to reverse the polarity, but nothing again. I tore it apart and checked continuity, and there is a problem. No continuity to one of the two brushes. My solder job worked! I had continuity from each terminal to one of the brushes, but not the other one. I found the gap in continuity going from the one brush, through some larger grey plastic box (largest component on the board), soldiered into the board then to some small green circular thing that is soldered to the circuit board then goes to ground. Please forgive my lack of knowledge in electrical repair. There is continuity everywhere else on the board. One problem is lack of knowledge of the components on the board, or if continuity should exist through all of them when not running. At least I know how to solder. I am pretty sure that I will be able to jump something so both brushes have power from each terminal (this is a two wire motor with ground provided by grounding the motor housing).

It seems that a new motor will come with the entire unit and cost $600. I don't want to pay that, so I am in search of an alternative. The other motors on eBay and the net are similar, but only a small percentage show dimensions. Short of calling or writing each motor supplier for correct dimensions, I don't know what to do. If I had a variety to put my hands on, I would surely be able to make a match. Dimensions are very important since the whole unit resides inside a plastic casing that bolts to the gimble housing outside of the freaking boat, submerged in saltwater. Genius.

Has anyone ever encountered this problem? This happened once prior, but it was covered under warranty.

Thanks,
Mike
