Today we were running off shore in a friends boat. Noticed Starboard side motor getting louder slapping type noise. Shut it down. Found one of the oil filters was leaking. Most of the oil was lost. Used port motor to get back to marina. Refilled oil and spun it up. At low rpm motor sounded mostly similar to port engine. But was seeing more black smoke from blowback on star motor. When we increased rpm we got more smoke. Oil pressure came up to normal (matched port motor) But was fluctuating slightly. Once we let up could here a slapping noise as motor decreased rpm.
Need any and all suggestions. I have done some work on outboards, but have very little knowledge about diesel engines. Do we need to do a compression test next or is there something else we should check first? If so, Do you just remove injectors and use correct fitting? Is it difficult to test compression on this particular engine?
Thanks in advance!

I know you dont want to hear it but I'd be calling a service tech. No oil and a Diesel is not a good thing. You may do more damage by running it trying to diagnose the issue.
