I have a 1998 volvo 5.7 GSi Duoprop serial number T01311023 and Stern Drive number T00823815. When using the power tilit/trim switch, the drive will lower but not raise. I don't even hear any noise from the motor when using the up switch. I tried to switch the two 40amp fuses and it will still go down but not up. (still no noise from the motor on the up switch) I tried to cross jump the two wires (I think the green and black wires). The drive will now go up but not down. I'm not sure what to do at this point or what to replace. I appreciate any help. Thanks.

Will it go up using the trailer button/s.
Do you have the full model number of your engine. The SN's are OMC and not much help. Need the letters after the 5.7GSi.

I don't have a trailer tilt button.

How about model number 57FCPBY.

I don't have a trailer tilt button.

Then you must have a trailer overide button some where.
Is the drive ALL the way down and won't come up any or does it just come up so far and stop? It may even be a defective up relay or relay control box.
Not exactly sure how your OMC is setup.
Here is the manual for the Volvo BY model engines. Other than model numbers, it has exactly the same information.

Re: Volvo Penta tilt/trim problem

It's a 25 foot boat and I have not seen one yet. Not in the rear of the boat or on the shifter.
If I cross the two colored wires, I can get the drive to move up as far as I need by holding the tilit up switch.

Post some pictures of your throttle/shift control or your trim buttons.

Re: Volvo Penta tilt/trim problem

just a guess but it could be the pressure switch in your small electrical box ontop of your tilt mechanism.

u may want to try

1)take the cover of your tilt electrical box (2-4 screws and bolts)
2)lift the switch that your worm gear hits about 1",its in center of box ( leave wires connected)
3) while the key is on (not engine running) press the switch (switch is toward hull side) with your finger,
and see if leg light goes on and off. if it does get helper to raise and lower leg using controls while you try the switch manly (careful with wires).

if that works then problem may be your switch isnt sitting right in box.
good luck

He doesn't have anything even close to the type system you have.
Just because it's a Volvo doesn't mean they are all the same.

Re: Volvo Penta tilt/trim problem

My previous boat had the tilt button on the shifter to raise the motor for trailer. The picture I took last night did not come out very well. Will have to take another one when I get home later tonight.

I have never dealt with that type control, so not sure what to tell you.
One thought, is it may be like some of the Mercruiser controld where the trim switch has 2 postions for up. Push it one click and it trims up to the limit, push it a little harder for the second click to raise for trailering. Worth a shot anyway.

That is the OMC type control that came on the late 90's Volvos. The switch is just a single pole double throw switch.

Where did you cross the wires...at the switch or back at the pump?

back towards the pump.
I think it was after the two relays/fuses.

Re: Volvo Penta tilt/trim problem

First thing I would do is pull the switch out at your control and manually connect the common wire to each of the other wires one at a time. If that doesn't work, it is possible the wire that goes from the switch to the up solenoid is open or the solenoid itself is faulty.

Re: Volvo Penta tilt/trim problem

If this problem repeats in exactly the same place each time, There is probably a button somewhere on your inst panel or switch panel that brings the drive up for trailering.
Look at it from that view point. You may need to use both buttons (whereever they are) to get the drive full up.

Re: Volvo Penta tilt/trim problem

Question I have is if you have the trim/tilt limiter or not. If you trace back the cable(3 wires) from the trim/tilt relays, do you have another box or not? I have an LK series Volvo Duo-Prop and I do not have the limiter circuit but the service manual indicates that I should have.

At the trim/tilt relay box, connect a voltmeter to the blue/white wire and operate the up switch. You should have battery voltage there. If you do, it is very possible that the relay is bad. If you don't, you need to go upstream. That is where the trim/tilt limiter will be if you have one or that wire will go up to your control.

Thanks for all your responses.
I'll give them a try this weekend and see what happens.

Re: Volvo Penta tilt/trim problem

You should really get a service manual for your engine/drive....the real Volvo one. I am getting my info directly from the manual. If you had one, you would probably have this fixed or at least troubleshot by now.

Re: Volvo Penta tilt/trim problem

I have same control as you(1999 VP) and you don't have a trim override like a Mercruiser. If I recall there was a common +12V and the trim button put it either up or down thru relays located back by the pump. Relays are same so swap them to eliminate a bad relay as cause. Providing that does not work (I doubt it will) then get a hold of a factory manual. The factory manual has a really good wiring schematic and if you can get that you can see what leads of the relays get +12V from the switch. I can look it up later tonight if you need it, I think Don sometimes posts link so them here.

FYI: My boat also has a connector on the starboard side of the intake (another place for bad connection to check). 1st thing I would do is jumper it at proper place at trim relays to make sure it is not in the boat somewhere, then go from there).
