Hello,

Volvo Penta AQ 130C
270 outdrive

My tlt trim motor has a problem. It travels up but seems to stop along the way. But with some help it goes up.

When I try to go down I hear it engaging but it wont move. However, when I take the electric motor off it will run when I go up or down.
So it sounds like a weak motor to me. What do you guys think? If so where can I get a motor?

In the meantime the drive is stuck in the up position. Will it bend the vice rod by just sitting there?

Your help is greatly appreciated

I don't think it will damage the rod just sitting there. Towing is another story.

Without removing the tilt assembly, it's hard to tell whats wrong. Could be the motor, hard to say. If it were me, I'd pull the whole mechanism, take it apart, clean it up and check it out. Its pretty easy to work on. Unless it has been in salt water all this time, then all bets are off.

How many wires are on your tilt motor?

Thanks for geting back. I had just removed it and cleaned up all the parts. The vice rod was bent so I replaced it. I have the 3 wire motor.

Re: Volvo Penta tilt trim question 270

Well if anyone is following this thread, I took my electric motor apart and the plastic brush holders broke. They seemed weak and brittle. So I oredered an aftermarket rebuild kit for my electric motor. Here is a link any of you run into this problem since the 3 wire motor is not easily found: http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/c/VOL2A-ARM/

I am willing to give it a try given the price. I may get bit but for 20 bucks I thought it was worth the risk. I hope this helps as I will give an update on my progress.

I hope this is helpful for anyone with the same problem but I successfully rebuilt the motor for the tilt unit. Just make sure you check the shims at the ends. Initially when I put mine back together, the motor was in a bind and it wasnt working correctly.
