Hi to all. Just joined the site and it has been awesone. I have a 98 regal with a volvo penta 3.0 just got the engine rebuild. The whole engine from oilpan to the rocker cover and now the timing has me stunned. I have followed the earlier posts using the shunt tool from volvo. As soon as i unplug the tool and the engine smoothes out the timing advances fron the 2 deg btdc to about 20 it runs smooth. Is this normal.

That is the thread i was following. I did everything to the "t" my concern is the engine staying at 20 deg once the shunt plug is removed.

What rpm is it idling at? Does the timing change at different/higher rpms?

It idels at 1000 rpm in neutral on the trailer on the water hose, when i give more gas the timing changes very little maybe 2-3 deg. Thats all. Can a bad ign module cause this.

Yes it can, and that is most likely the cause.
You also need to get that idle down to 700 rpm, or you are going to have a serious problem with dieseling.

Now on the module its self. Does any one know if a gm module for a car would work for this application. I picked one up from autozone and all the pin letters are the same. The parts guy said that the 3.0 uses a old chevy cavalier dist and ignition system?

The parts guy is on drugs. It is a marine spec distributor as is the module. The car modules, even though they are identical in appearance, are designed to work with the cars computer. The marine one is a stand alone system. Take the car one back and leave cause your stoned parts guy isn't going to find the correct one.(not sold through Delco auto division;I have a friend who works for AC-Delco, I've checked). Go to Volvo or a GM Industrial engine dealer if you can find one for a module. I'm lucky, I have KEM Equipment in my back yard.'nutcase

Thank you for the info. My module has a 399 7g07 on it. Does anyone know where to get one for a good price. And is there a cross ref # to sierra or other vendor

Ayuh,... It sounds more like you're just wanting to throw money away, as you've Not diagnosed a Real Problem...

I'm really confused. I followed the base timing procedures using the so called shunt timing tool and now i dont know what to do?????? As stated earlier with the engine running and the shunt tool plugged in the base timing set to 2 deg btdc as soon as i unplug the tool the timing jumps to 15-20 deg btdc at an idle?????

Ayuh,... You locked it in base timing mode with the shunt,+ set the timing, Right,..??
Then when you remove the shunt, the igntion takes over,+ moves the timing to where the motor Wants it...
If it Stayed at the same point,.... That would be a PROBLEM....

If you did this By the Book, you've stated Nothing that would say something is Wrong...
Just the fact that it's iding Way to High will advance the timing, as it Should...

The book and all the posts here state that it should be 2 deg btdc at an idle and adv when the throttle is applied . Right???

Assuming you actually do have a 98 engine (BY model) Your timing with the shunt should be at 2? ATDC, not BTDC. Big difference. with the shunt off, your timing should look something like this.

At idle the numbers will bounce around a little to a lot, that is the reason for the shunt to set it accurately. Has nothing to do with with where it runs.

Re: Volvo penta timing nightmere

3.0 gs pbycce is the model number.
Yeah, you have a BY model

Did you find the OEM service manuals for your engine up in the Adults Only sticky?
