HI, I am trying to replace my Trim sending unit on my Volvo penta out drive it is a 2004. The problem I am having is that I can not find the right replacement part, I included a photo of the one I need and the Part Number 3840830. I have searched and searched and tried to compare the photos of the parts available but none of them are the same as what I need. The one I have is a 2 wire unit. Is there something I am missing ? Did they change the part and do I have to adapt the newer ones to fit my outdrive ? I did find one using that part # and it said out of stock from a company in the UK. I'm in USA and can't find any. If anyone has any input on this it would help greatly as I am at a lose. Thanks

After a while it's pretty common for part numbers to supersede for many reasons. Design change, vendor change, system changes, recalls etc. This is called a supersession chain. It can be a pain to work from the old numbers once they're obsolete. usually dealers can easily view supersession chains to help you out. As long as they're dealers for your specific brands.

I think it's easier to look up the parts diagram than working from an old part number. Especially considering numbers on the parts can be misleading, and different. If I had a dollar for everyone who asked me for starter part # j1171 lol

I read that post from 2011, I guess I just have to do without the trim gauge as I won't be able to find a suitable sending unit.

Back to the Trim sending unit on my boat. It's a Volvo Penta SX-M DP-SM lower unit. I have included a photo of the one thats in my lower unit.photo (1)..All I can find now is units like photo(2). Is there a retrofit that I need to do to use these newer units ? I have the newer type that I purchased and I tried to fit it in but no way. as you can see by the first photo, there are 2 small holes in the white plate that fit 2 small projecting pins in my lower unit. The new one (photo 2) is completely different. Any suggestions would help me. Thanks

Sounds to me that you have left the Plastic bit inside the head of the Allen bolt.
Do you have a digital gauge or the analogue one?
I happen to have an analough one that I bought by mistake as my gauge is digital but I am in Spain. where are you?
Part number I have is 3849411.

Ha Ha. Then the blank look when you ask for serial number, only to find out that they’re not even sure what color their engine is. Ah the joys of working the parts counter on a Saturday.
Most people don’t realize the value that a GOOD dealer can provide in a parts purchase. They don’t save any money when they buy the wrong part and find out that no reputable parts supplier will accept returns on electrical parts.

But it I do understand the lure of cheap parts, I’ve fallen for it many times myself.

The O.P. Has definitely broken the old trim sender and part of it is still stuck in the bolt. Not to worry, that was a common problem with that design.

Volvo has updated the trim sensor many times, the newest one is much better.

To have the best best chance at getting the correct sensor requires the TSK serial number and what gauge is in the boat. Pictures help. The serial number allows someone with access to dealer software to pull up the parts bulletins that walk you through how to select the right sensor for your boat.

Or if your a DIY kind of guy Go to the iBOATS or official Volvo parts site and search by serial number. You can then use that part number and search the web for a cheap knock off.

Ahhha, So that must be my problem:eek:, I left part of that sending unit in the bolt ! Tomorrow I will go to the boat and check that ! I'm an old Trucker, that's why I come to you guys for the Boat help. And by the way, it's an analog gauge if that helps.
Thanks to all for the help and I'll be back with the results of what I find.:joyous:

This has probably been posted about before but I can't find anything on it. I am replacing my trim sending unit on my 2003 Volvo 5.0 GXI SX DP-SM drive, The sender in the boat has (2) wires, the new sender has (3) wires... 2 blacks and 1 white I read some place where all the new senders have (3) wires, which wires go where to get the new unit to work ? Thanks

Thanks Muc, it was part of the old unit stuck in there. Now I'm trying to figure out how to go from a 2 wire to a 3 wire, I did another post on that somewhere in here before I found my old post here. I'm new on these blog things and learning to navigate them.

Every Volvo trim sender comes with instructions—— in like 7 languages—— did you read the instructions?

Been a while since I’ve done trim sender on a DP-SM are you sure you don’t want a 2 wire?

DP-SM is your drive. Need to know what TSK you have. Got a serial number?

Not sure what that serial number and product number are for. Neither one comes up as a good number in the Volvo Penta north america system. Maybe for another country? If you want to post the hull identification number from the starboard aft corner of the boat, I maybe able to look it up with that.

All trim senders for new product are 3 wire. But a lot of the older stuff still uses 2 wire senders.

I'm guessing you should have a 2 wire sender for your boat.
part number 3594989 is the part number for a trim sender kit. That kit will have a 3840830 trim sender in it.
Yegboats gave you this part number back in May

If you want to try using a 3 wire sender then kit part number 3849411 might work, just don't use the white wire. Put it in the empty cavity of the connector.

What part number did you buy?

Maybe GA_Boater can merge you two threads?
