I am thinking about trading off my Bayliner with the 3.0L Merc and my boat before this was a Merc also. Problem is most all boats I have looked at have the Volvo Penta and was just wondering how they are compared to the Merc.
Please, let me know what you all think about the Volvo.

Volv Penta started to change over their drives to the newest SX/DP-S version in 1995. Before that, you had the 290, 280 and 270 drives. All are excellent drives. All have cone clutches as opposed to the Merc Alpha drives that still use dog clutches and all have motor mounted raw water pumps as opposed to the raw water pump inside the drive on the Merc Alphas.

I beleive the SX Cobra and Dual Prop Drives from 1995 are superior to the mercruiser alpha drives from what i've read on these forums. Also as already noted, the water pump implellar that needs to be changed routinely is located up on the engine with volvo's, mercruisers is inside the drive, making it alot more labor intensive to get out. A very nice feature if i do say so myself. Either way a newer Merc or Volvo will do the job. Seems Volvo may have an edge in my book from what i've learned, although you'll get lots of experience and opinions.

Volvo, from what I have read their drives are better than Merc. Never owned a Merc though, just Volvo.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Scaaty...that why I asked this question. Questions on the forum could be looked at 2 ways 1.) Not enough of the drives out there to write about (not so good) 2.) There are alot of them but they hold up so well no one has to write about them. (very good)
I just here so much about Merc's that you would think they are the only game in town then all of a sudden (it seems) you can't find a boat without the Volvo
Thanks everyone for your thoughts
