Volvo prop stuck

I am sure this question has been asked somewhere on this site but I can't find where,so apologies if I am going over old ground.I have a 2004 Larson with a Volvo duo prop drive fitted. The small ID plate on the side reads DP-5M.
The drive is due for service and of course to change the oil both props must come off.The first one ,easy ,the second is welded to the shaft.
I have tried everything in my book of tricks to get it to budge, persuasion with blocks of wood and large hammers, gallons of penetrine, cans of freeze it etc, etc. I also made a puller from high tensile threaded rod but it just snapped and now I have bits of rod stuck behind the prop.
The only thing I havn,t used to this point is heat, as my local mechanic says this will destroy the seals??
I am starting to think though that heat will be the only way to free it and the seals will have to be sacrificed.
Does anyone have any ideas???
Thanks in advance.

Re: Volvo prop stuck

My guess is that is was never removed and had the splines greased. This is an important annual service item that is often overlooked with results you are now familiar with. Corrosion! Props need to be greased on the shaft annually.

What I have done in the past is try to pull the prop with a prop puller. Most often it will come off of the rubber hub (needing to be replaced) then the rubber hub is ground down on one or 2 sides to expose the core of the hub.

Once here carefully cut (cut off wheel) the length of this (not in to the prop shaft) and use a chisel to spread it to remove form the shaft.

DISCLAIMER::: I have not done a DP drive. So first check that there is not a nut or pin holding the inner prop on.

Re: Volvo prop stuck

The props have been off at least every year since I bought the boat in 2005,though this time it is getting closer to 18 months since the last service.
My local mechanic did say the type of grease is critical as to how easy they will come off next time and that he has reverted to anti cease compound instead (now he tells me).
The inner lock nut has been removed for sure.
Where could I get a propeller puller from??? Is this a Volvo part???
I have an idea for puller Mk2 but a genuine one would be good.
I did manage to retrieve the broken bits of threaded rod out of the exhaust outlet behind the prop, so at least I can go boating tomorrow.
