I'm troubleshooting a starter problem on my Volvo Penta 4.3GL PEFS engine. I need help in locating the starter relay. I've identified the trim and fuel pump relays but not the starter. Thanks for your help - Alan

Re: Volvo Starter Relay

I'm not sure on the actual location, but according to the wiring diagram for your cranking system, you can follow the yellow/red wire off of your starter solenoid as it travels straight to the starter relay.

Re: Volvo Starter Relay

The starter relay should be located under the black plastic cover either at the front or on top of the the engine. May look like this one,

Boatinfo - Volvo Penta EF series Wiring Diagrams

There should be 2 relays, a square one and a rectangular one. The rectangular one should be for the starter relay.

Don't forget you have a starter "solenoid" located at/on the engine starter that has an tendency to go bad as well.

Be sure to let us know what you find wrong, good luck.:)

Re: Volvo Starter Relay

I'll return to the boat, remove the black plastic cover, and check for the 2nd rectangular relay (item 7 on the wiring diagram). I'll also follow Don's procedure for checking the solenoid. My engine is now 14 years old with 500+ hours; would you recommend replacing the complete starter?

Thanks Guys, - Alan

Yes they are not that expensive do some searching on the net. One thing to remember a failure on the water can be extremely annoying, imagine if you will your ten miles from no where..first day of vacation....a storm blow's in. etc...etc...etc.

Re: Volvo Starter Relay

I located the starter relay, jumped sockets 87 & 30 and the starter runs. Also the wiring from the helm remote switch to the relay checks OK. It looks like I have a bad relay? The relay is a Hella 4RD 960388 - 31. I've tried to look it up but believe it might have been replaced by a later part no. Thanks again, Alan

Re: Volvo Starter Relay

Just take it to a NAPA store or any autoparts store. They can match that relay. They are more common than zits on a teenager.

Don't get sucked into buying a "volvo" relay. A relay, is a relay, is a relay...
