I have a 2000 Volvo SX drive, One of the bolts that holds my gimbel housing is partially stripped.
It threads in ok, but will not tighten up. Anyone have any fixes for this? Or am I looking at a new housing?
Thanks

Need more details. There are usually some creative ways to repair stripped threads...sometimes if lucky a longer fastener can access deeper threads which were tapped but not originally used. If it can be drilled thru and a nut or tapping plate applied on the backside, great. Sometimes if its only one out of a group of fasteners is acceptable for a time.

A helicoil is good but typically requires a much larger hole to be drilled and tapped and there isn't enough "meat" left to make this happen. Sometimes going up "one size" in the standard range of coarse thread fasteners will be less than the diameter required for a helicoil but acceptable in strength. However its a job which should ideally be setup on something like a milling machine to get right...and that would be followed by a different fastener purchase or a lathe project to make a custom stud if its that. So definitely some more work there in wrenching and disassembly but typically it can be made as good as new with some machine shop capability.

Pictures would really help narrow down the set of possibilities.

From memory, there is plenty of metal where the threads for the stud are to allow you to have it drilled out and tapped to the next size up. You will need to remove the gimbal housing and take it to a machine shop. They should be able to tap it and make a stepped stud up to fit.
By the way a new housing comes in at $679.65 bit on the expensive side for just a stripped thread!

The part number 3857979 is actually called a "Pivot Housing" unless we are confused and you are talking about the "Gimbal Ring".
