Took the boat out for the first trip of the year. Worked fine with no problem till the last run of the day. Going to the dock it got stuck in forward gear. Got the boat home and checked the shift mechanism, it is stuck in forward gear. What could be the cause. To the shift mechanism off to look inside and everything looked great. Oil all the way to the top with no water. Any ideas would be great!!!

Don't know about your setup but I had a simular problem a few years back while swinging around in a logoon, There is a small metal clip that holds the cable in place under the shifter control. The clip fell off after a whole day out with no problems. It just snaps in place.

I unhooked the shifter cable from the shift mechanism. I wish it was the cable.

The drive is on a 1994 Chris Craft. When I get off work I will look up the serial number on it and post it if that would help too.

If you unhooked the cable from the drive, then you have drive problems and need to find a dealer to check it out.

I have worked and built cars all my life. So I am no stranger to getting my hands dirty. So I guess I am asking if it is easy to take apart so I might be able to fix myself.

Just had same problem. Turns out that outside of shifter cable came apart so now I can put it in forward only and not neutral or reverse.I have a 1999 fourwinns 18' horizon 180 w/volvo sx.
Need to find out length of cable for replacement. If anybody knows cable length can you let me know.
Thanks

Re: Volvo SX shift mechanism stuck in forward

Thanks Don for the link to the manual. I took it apart this morning and unstuck the shift cone. It turns out I did have a little water in with the oil which I believe cause the cone to stick. Now I need advice on what complete seal kit to buy on here. I did get a little confused if I looked up the right one. Any help would be great!! Also Don, someone should set up a donation sticky for you. I all the boats shops around here do not want to help with any information at all. They just want to you to bring the boat to them. Which they are in the business to make money but a little help can be great advertising. Being a poor man like me I can not afford to take the boat to someone. So I would rather give you like $10 for a tip since you saved me hundreds. Anyways just an idea.

+1 on that!!

Don, and the manuals he shared, has saved me lots of money over the last couple of years. He could be our "Samurai Boat repairman." :D

Seriously though, knowing you've got the guru here to help bail you out if you get in too deep makes it easier to try and tackle jobs you might otherwise balk at. Cheers!
