I know what you're all thinking. NOT ANOTHER Volvo to Merc topic. But I searched and could not find what I was looking for.

Does anyone happen to know if there is any dimensional differences between the Volvo and Merc from the transom to the back of the engine? So basically transom to the bell housing I suppose. From memory, looks like the Mercruiser set up might be a little longer than the Volvo, but the logical me is thinking they would be the same for production purposes.

Let me know if anyone can help me out.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,..... It'll depend entirely on Which Merc, 'n Which Volvo,.....

As far as production purposes, I'm Guessin' most I/O drivelines run within a foot of each other, overall length inside the hull,...
Excudin' I-6 motors,...

What's the basis of yer round-about question,..??

Thanks for the reply Bondo!

I'm planning a Merc to Volvo conversion but the boat in question was never designed to have a V8(305 chev) - was always a 4.3. The Merc that's in it doesn't quite sit on the mounts and in my head the Volvo set up is a little more compact, I literally only need to get an inch out of it but two would be nice. Just wondering if I will be expanding the mounts or not.

Hope that's a little clearer!

Ayuh,.... So ya got a Merc 4.3l, Alpha,..??

'n ya wanta put in a Volvo SBC, with Which drive,..??

The 4.3l don't sit on it's Mounts,..?? motor mount, to hull/ stringer mount,..??
Which way is it off,..?? fore,..?? aft,..??

Generally speakin', ya Plan of abit of glass, 'n wood work,....

Fit the transom housin', good, 'n true,...
Hang the motor on a hook, attach the aft mounts, 'n align it,...
Then build the motor mounts, hull-side, out to the iron motor mounts,....
Sometimes just shims do the job,...
