I'm installing a couple of DP-E transom shields. They are used parts, but I have taken care to refurbish them.

What is the best method for cutting the new hole for the shield? Jigsaw, sawzall, router? I'm going from a 280 to the DP-E.

Once the hole is cut, what is the best method for sealing the raw wood edge? Marine epoxy? If so, how many coats is recommended?

I am installing new rubber seals around the shields. What type of adhesive/caulk is recommended for bedding the seal in the transom shield groove and against the transom?

Is there a required torque for the transom shield bolts?

I have the installation manual; however, these areas are not touched upon. Thanks in advance for any input.

Re: Volvo transom shield installation questions.

If I was cutting into a wood transom, I would use CPES to seal any exposed wood after surgery...and maybe even swab on a coat of 5200 on top of that.

when I redid my transom, I glassed over the wood at the edges of the hole.

I put a couple of coats of polyester resin on mine; the first coat was mixed to cure slowly so there was plenty of time for the resin to penetrate the wood.

The installation instructions are in the 1st section of the manual around page 22....you can use whatever saw you have, and follow the paper template if needed. No cauking needed on the rubber gasket, just seal the hole edge and make sure to put the bevels per manual, to allow servicing of the trim without removing the shield later on.

Re: Volvo transom shield installation questions.

From what I've read and learned most of the resident Experts here on the Forum don't think much of CPES. Poly resin by itself is a very poor sealer due to the fact it has no binders and will crack when fully cured. Fully Mixed, un-thinned Epoxy would be my choice for sealing the edges of the wood. Placing the mixed resin cup in a pan of warm water would adequately warm it and render it to a consistency that will make it penetrate and adhere well to the edges of the wood. 2 coats should be fine. I think ZOOL has got the rest of the install pretty much covered for you ;)

My apologies ... I guess the manual I have is the drive overhaul manual, not the installation manual. Wow, this is going to make it much easier, thank you all!
