The Trim gauge hasnt worked for a bit now on my 2000 Four Winns Horizon. I noticed that one of the wires on the sending unit, which is located on the starboard side of the SX outdrive, was broken. There are 3 wires, 2 black ones that are a thicker gauge and in one cable and another, thinner white wire, which was broken. There was not enough wire left on the sensor side for me to be able to splice it. So I found what I believe is the correct replacement part for $40. Part #3849411

The question I have is can I just splice the new one on to the old wires instead of running the new cables all the way to the dash which will require removing the outdrive amongst other horrible chores ? I understand that this isnt exactly the proper way to do the job, but was wondering if it would still work ?

Yes it can, but you take the chance of a bad connection later. Many use adhesive shrink tubing to seal the soldered connection
