Can one or should one use the metal Volvo penta riser gaskets on aftermarket Barr riser and manifolds?

Cannot say with 100 percent certainty, but have been using Merc gaskets on Barr and others but these are also the fiber type.

Which gasket are you calling metal, are they for dry joint exhaust?

. Volvo penta 3863191 very thin tin like metal gasket with a black coating and a ridges. It is not a dry joint exhaust.

No Title

Here is a picture of the thin metal gasket Volvo penta part # 3863191. The gaskets were with the used boat when I purchased it. The boat was run in salt water with 200 hours on the engine and the risers and manifolds were in bad shape. So I have replaced the manifolds with Barr after markets and have new Barr risers with the fiber gaskets from Barr. I do not know if the volvo gasket is better than the fiber ones or the Volvo gaskets only for Volvo manifolds and risers. Also Is the merc gaskets superior to Barr gaskets?

I ended up using fiber, worked well
Kccoe reply : I think I am going with fiber ones after I researched further on the Volvo penta gaskets . The Volvo gaskets require very precise procedures and the installation instruction contradict themselves . The instructions state not to use any sealant with the Volvo gaskets and then other Volvo instructions state you need use a high temp copper sealant with the gaskets. The Volvo manual states torque the riser bolts to 12 to 13 ft-lb and the gasket instruction states torque riser bolts to to 26 ft -lb . A big difference

I used the gaskets that came with a Barr man and riser kit, Barr recommends sparkling clean surfaces and sealer. Not many hours, but no issues ... ;)

The fiber type gasket provide more room for error. The error I mention is if the surfaces are not perfectly flat. The Barr manifolds in most cases are not made to the same precise standards used by Volvo. Keep in mind I am not a Volvo guy just offering thoughts on the issue. If it was me I would use either the Barr of Merc fiber gaskets and also take a flat file across the two surfaces to see if it is flat.

I agree. I went with Barr because of price and reviews of their product and warranty.
