A buddy of mine has a 99 blazer. He just had the heads done on the vortec 4.3. Turns out he has a bad crank. So he is getting a reman engine. So to make a long story short he is GIVING me the heads. My question is will those 99 heads work on my 94 motor. I know I would have to change my intake manifold. But im also wondering if it would be worth the change. Am I looking at about 30hp gain. It is already a 4 barrel carb.

Re: Vortec heads

take a few. no give here. the vortec heads, v6 and v8, have been bench proven and street proven to add a very noticeable gain in hp. 30hp gain? MAYBE. i have also seen guys spend the money for vortecs, put them on, only to have the motor run no better than before. why? every last thing has to be up to par or better for optimal performance. adding one thing here, one thing there will get you results, but at a higher cost. i've spent the last decade n a half studying, researching, wrenching, tuning, scratching, tearing apart...you get the idea. i've tested with a smallblock 350, changing everything from cam to heads, ignition systems to carbs. what i've learned, not one single upgrade alone will yield "advertised" gains. definately bolt the vortecs on, get the correct manifold. but while you're there, think about the cam. think about the ignition system. a good aftermarket coil, ignition module, plugs, and most importantly, the most overlooked item in the ignition, the wires. low, low resistance wires. there are many, many cheap and free tricks to gain hp, without losing economy.
