Can anyone make anything out of this serial number? What would be an exact replacement for this motor?

What's it in? Year, make, model.Pic of the covers.Pic of the end of the flywheel at the pressure plate.
Volvo used a light duty block in a bunch of boats. They are still available(I think)

Its a pre-'87 2 pc rear main seal motor since it does not include the size in liters in the #.
an exact replacement would be based on the Volvo Penta specs and that year casting.. but no need to stay with the year model if you want to further upgrade. the crank flywheel flange changes after 86. you need teh 153 flywheel for the aq260 flywhel cover. see this thread http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=524957

87 and later crank flange on the left side.
86 and earlier crank flange on the right side.

if its factory red, its pre 1993. the casting numbers that you show are somewhat illegible. if its 3970010 its a 1969-1979 350.

http://www.thedirtforum.com/castings.htm

there should be a decal with the actual Volvo Penta serial number on it located on the starboard valve cover.

if its a AQ260a, it is a GM 350 260 hp which is the ubiquitously common generic 350 rating. there are two Gen I block changes that you should be aware of: the change to a one piece seal crank shaft in 1986 requiring the small crank flange, and the use of Vortec heads in 1996 requiring vortec specific intake.

if your replacing the whole thing from carb to flywheel, any SBC based Marine motor will work. if your replacing only the long block (block and heads) any pre 1996 will work if you use the right flywheel for the crank.

Scott i dont disagree but. teh aq260 flywheel cover will only accept the 153 tooth flywheel. so if he goes later then 87 he not only needs that style flywheel flange.. he needs the 153.

It is a drop in replacement for an old Chrysler. So if I ever want to go with a 383 long block all I would require is the 153 tooth flywheel version?
