I know this has covered in the past, and I've read everything in the search, but still having same problem. Yesterday, worked fine leaving the ramp, by end of day, up it came in reverse. The springs are good the rod isn't worn neither are the pawls. 24' Albemarle 1983. Anybody have any ideas? I've had a VP mechanic look at it, he said it looked fine....

The 280 came with power tilt or hyd trim.
If it's popping up then the actuator rod could be sticking and not allowing the locks or pawls to connect.
Look into where the tilt ram/rod meets the arm. is the cap still on the ram?
I believe when the ram is all the way up it should have a space between the end and the arm that has the release rod.

I have a 1979 Albemarle and mine did the same thing when I first bought it. It could be a few things.

On mine items 7 (one on each side) needed replaced. They did not look worn, but they were.

Also item 11 is the part that gets pushed down by the rod from the shift mechanism and locks the down lock. When the reverse downlock is not engaged springs move item 11 up and unlocks the downlock. Item 12 has a notch that item 11 rests on in the unlock position. On mine the notch on item 12 was worn off allowing item 11 to move up too far and causing the rod to miss it when shifted into reverse.

If you still need this fixed and you are local Hampton Roads (as most Albies are), I can swing by and look at yours.
