I have VP DP-A outdrives and according to the shopmanual they use API GL 5 SAE 90 gearoil. The former owner has informed me that he always used VP fully synthetic gearoil 75W-90. Will I make any mistake in continuing with synthetic oil ( except from price) instead of going back to the specified type ? Will I get any benefit in using the fully synthetic type?

VP synthetic transmission oil 75W/90 is API GL5. I think this is exactly what you want.

Re: VP DP-A gear lube

Hey Chris & Rabidfish.
Sorry I did not specify my question correct.
The manual says normal gearoil API GL5 SAE 90 for VP drive type DP-A. The former owner has used fully synthetic oil 75W/90.
My question is, should I go back to the type specified by the shopmanual for DP-A or should I continue with the fully synthetic. Will I get problems or benefits in continuing with the synthetic type and visa versa if I change to the specified type.

You can use the Synthetic with no problems at all. The insides of the drives and all the seals are identical.Even those that upgrade the lower units from a single prop drive running 30W motor oil to a DP lower Volvo recommends going to The GL-5 Synthetic.
