VP seawater pump on a Mercruiser

I have a VP 4.3 engine in my boat and changing the seawater impeller is a simple 20 minute job, but I've noticed how people complain about the intense effort required to perform the same task on a Mercruiser.
What would be the feasibility of leaving the impeller off of the Mercruiser drive and mounting a VP pump on the engine for ease of maintenance?
