First off, here are my numbers.
2001 Seaswirl 175 with Volvo Penta 4.3Gl
4012006802
3869053

My boat ran great all summer but the last two times I had it out, when I turned the key off, the engine sputtered and wouldn't shut down for 10-15sec. It starts and runs fine until I go to turn it off.
Someone told me it is a timing issue. Is that correct and how do I fix it?
Thanks in advance.

Re: VP sputters when it is turned off

I would say in the past few years that the most common reason for the engine running on/dieseling is idle rpm and shutting the engine down immediately after a hard run.

The engine should not idle higher that 750 in neutral, better closer to 700. If you are idling 800 rpm or higher, you found your problem.

The other problem is the quick shut down after a hard run. Let the engine idle for a minute or two to cool down and burn off the excess fuel from slowing down before you shut it off.

There are a number of other things, but these two cures 90% of the problems here at iboats.

PS, you have a 4.3GLPEFS which is a 2000 model year engine. Typical in boats, a boats model year starts at a different time than the engines model year.

Turn the key back on right away when it does this (diesels). What could happen is that the engine sucks water into the cylinders and you get a hydrolock (very bad, could mean new engine time). check the idle speed with a shop tachometer and also adjust the mixture if need be. I richened my mixture up just a bit this summer and only had it diesel once on me as opposed to fairly often.
