Re: VP Throttle Shift problem

Cable could be worn out inside creating too much slop. Then you have to pass neutral a little to get it to stay in neutral. The shift mechanism may also be worn down. Then it won't drop into the detent and help pull the cable to neutral.

The cable is the most common problem, the shift mechanism being worn out is normally only seen on commercial fishing boats with lots of hours and shifting from gear to neutral.

Don S do you men the throttle cable or the shift cable if its the gears, is this somthing i can check and replace if necessary whilst in the water, it looks as thow the gear cable drops down behind the exhaust and is Inaccessible.

I'm talking about the shift cable, the throttle cable has nothing to do with shifting from forward, neutral, and reverse.
No, you can't change it in the water.
You should also check the drive and see if the gear lube is ok. If you have water in the drive and it turns the oil milky, it can destroy your drive.

Have you done a shift cable adjustment since noticing this problem? Might want to start there.

No shift cable adjustment, got the boat quite late in the season last year, when i searched for this problem i noticed that the last owner had also asked this question, it was dealt with through a broker so i can't ask him myself, may be best to have it lifted out, then i'll post again see if you guys can walk me through it. so will this problem mean taking the leg apart or is this going to far, seams a bit scary for a newbe.

Re: VP Throttle Shift problem

THe cable can be replaced without removing the drive. If the boat has been kept in the water, and it's been 2 years since the ujoint bellows was replaced, I would sure plan on replacing it while it's out of the water. The only thing you have to do is remove the upper gear box on the drive to change the bellows. The upper gear box is also the part that has the shift mechanism in it.
Here is a thread on how to remove the upper gear box to replace the bellows, it's an easy DIY job, you just have to keep track of the shims, and keep things clean.

You can also download the OEM service manuals in the Adults Only sticky at the top of this forum. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=288430 see item 11.

Re: VP Throttle Shift problem

Did you get the seals and gaskets listed in that link I gave you for removing the upper gear box?

The other thing you need to do is get the upper pulled and see if there is water in the bellows, if there is, you may have water in the intermediate bearings of the flywheel cover. If you have water in them, then you have even worse problems that could require an engine pull to fix. So let's hope you don't strike water.
That is why it's always best to change those bellows every other year. It's easy and fairly inexpensive compared to the alternative of pulling the engine.
Here is a thread that covers that process if you want to read it.
