How can one tell or test to see if the VRO is working properly and that you don't have a plugged injector? Is their some way you can check this every season? to avoid a blow up or a rebuild.

Silver harley,First off, there is no injector. The VRO is a duel action pump that is comprised of a fuel half and an oil half that discharges to the carbs as fuel/oil mix.The best way to verify oil consumption is to mark a line on the side of the remote oil tank and after running out a given amount of fuel ,note the amount that the remote tank dropped.

So the oil and gas is mixed before it gets to the carbs. So if a failure is going to happen it will happen to all of the cylinders not just one then. Is their a way to test the VRO other than marking the resivore? By marking the resivore and seeing that it is not working wouldn't damage to the motor happen.

Although failures are rare, the answer to your question is yes.

Is the VRO electric or does it run straight off of the motor.

Silverharley. while making your test use a test tank with 50:1 gas/oil, or use 50:1 in your gas tank until you decide it is working properly. Been there and done that.
Taz

The VRO pump is an air motor(diaphragm) driven unit via crankcase pulses. There is a hose that attaches to the air motor section of the pump which runs from the crankcase of your engine. The wires leaving the VRO pump are alarm wires for fuel restriction and no oil.

How reliable is that VRO pump? Looking around the net on other forums the pros say to disconnect the VRO and plug the lines and mix the fuel yourself.
How often should it be rebuilt? What is it's life or MBF.

silverharley,The VRO pump on your engine is pretty reliable as long as one pays attention to a few basic things.Oil level in reservoir, oil hose condition and connections, oil reservoir tank vent, fuel line condition and connections, and insure seasonally that there is no accumulated moisture in oil reservoir. While your VRO pump has fuel restriction and oil flow alarms within it they are not a failsafe mechanism. The question of whether to disconnect or not is a topic that is sure to stir emotions and I will bail out on this one.A new unit sells for around $250 and a rebuild kit That comes with parts to rebuild the fuel side and air motor sells for around $60 bucks. If your VRO is working presently there is no need to rebuild or replace. If you do decide to defeat the VRO and mix 50:1 the VRO works just fine as a conventional pump after the oil inlet is capped and the alarms are disconnected.
