Re: vro as fuel pump only
Hello, I have a 1986 90hp evinrude with vro. I wondering if the oil injection only can be eliminated and the pump still maintain its function for the gas. I'm concerned about the vro failing. I would like to mix oil and gas manually.
Also does anyone know the paticulars of removing the system (pics would be incredible. Thank you much!!!:
Since your question has been answered, I don't feel so bad about hi-jacking your thread.

Just some things you might want to consider.
1. Your 1986 with VRO has made it through 21 seasons so it might not be terribly prone to failure.
2. You may not even have a VRO pump by now. It could very well have been updated.
3. VRO systems aren't nearly as bad as many people describe them. Many engine failures that are blamed on the VRO have nothing to do with the VRO itself. The previous owner of my 1986 40hp VRO had bypassed it and was running pre-mix. I cleaned the oil tank, made sure all the fittings were tight, bled the oil lines and used it for two years with no problem. Mine was the original VRO pump and was in its 20th season when the
fuel pump side failed. I replaced it with the oil pump that was recommended in 2005 and with the exception of the cost, have nothing bad to say about the system.
Several people operate my boat and I felt more comfortable trusting the oil injection system than I did trusting those people doing the mix correctly.
If you make sure the alarm is functioning, you should have ample warning before any damage would be done to your motor. I carry a 16 oz. bottle of oil for use if the alarm does ever go off. I'll just shut down, add the oil to my 6 gallon tank, agitate it to mix and go home. My replacement pump has been in service for about 3 seasons and not having to worry about pre-mixing is worth the extra cost of the pump to me. We also have a 4 stroke engine and it doesn't make any difference what gas can I grab since they are all straight gas.
