VRO disconnect

Hey guys I have the Evinrude 120 1990. Ive just rebuilt the thing all new pistons and rings bearings carb kit and water pump. I wasent sure of my original reason for breakdown other than the rings were wore down a good bit and the thermostats were stuck open. But anyway The VRO is 14 years old and I have decided to mix from now on even though during my break in I left the VRO hooked up and mixed in the tank I put a mark on the VRO and it seems to be pulling oil but Im not sure if its working all the time lower RPMs it dont seem to pull at all I need to know the proper way of disconnecting the VRO without harming the fuel pump as they seem to be one unit.<br />Thanks <br />Hooked

true, but if the pump goes out and the alert horn doesn't sound, there goes your motor as well...My pump was weak, but the horn notified me and I decided to disconnect mine instead of replace the pump..They are a bit pricey!!<br /><br />My 2 cents worth

Im with you Tex.I trust MYSELF way more than anything mechanical.I only need to hear one negative experience and I am turned off to it.I am in the process of having a 96 150 Ocean pro put on my Mako and I will not be using the oil injection.Charlie

Yeah, I can't afford to take risks like that!!! I wouldn't be going anywhere for a long time if my Johnny hosed on me..My mechanic didn't charge me anything to disconnect it and I feel much better now...The instructions in the thread that DJ posted is accurate..This looks just like what my mechanic did....<br /><br />Better to be safe than sorry... I say disconnect it..

I disconnected my VRO last spring, took me all of about ten minutes. Received good instruction from this forum. Now I know my motor is getting proper lubrication. By the way, motor is a '93 40hp Evinrude.

Outboard motors do not need 50:1 at all times.The OMC VRO was just this ....Variable Ratio Oiling.<br />Being here,on this forum,I gather that a lot of you have had a lot of failures with your VRO's and I respect what you say.<br />Most failures I see are fuel leaks,some over-oiling,and maybe one oil failure.<br />My two cents worth .<br />DHP

Hey ya'll,<br /><br />Here's my two cents worth. I was faced with this decission last fall. I researched the subject into the ground. My mechanic who's honesty I trust, claims that the latest and greatest VRO's when they do fail, will create in an over oil situation. I chose to purchase the new pump @ $280.00 or so. The installation was pretty simple. Don't forget to install a new pulse limiter/backfire preventer thingy. It since seems to work very well. Good Luck!

I just ordered a new VRO replacement pump for my '86 140 Evinrude. Haven't got it yet, so I'm not sure what is included in the kit. However, I take note of 8up's advice to install a:<br /><br />"new pulse limiter/backfire preventer thingy"<br /><br />I assume this isn't the technical term.... <br /><br />Can anyone elaborate for me here? What exactly is this thing and what does it do? Does it come in the factory VRO replacement kit?<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />Brew
