1994 had OMS, not VRO, but same functionality.

How reliable is the OMS system? Should it be disconnected?

Depends on how reliable maintence is?
If units are maintaned properly they are extermly reliable if abused they are not.
By maintence I mean check\change oil filter in tank at least once per year (also check low oil warning)
Use good oil XD30 or better
Don't mix oil
Mix gas first tank every year to verify operation. A good time to check no oil warning.

I had a VRO on an 1985 Johnson I bought new. Changed it to VRO II during the warranty period and it worked perfectly for over 20 years. Then I sold that boat with over 1000 hours on the motor.
