VRO problem?

I had the cover off my 95 Johnson 130HP outboard and noticed the fuel through the glass of the fuel filter was really blue as if it was mixed with oil. This should be clear gas right from the tank. I am thinking that oil must be leaking through the VRO from the oil line to the fuel line. Is this possible or normal? I am wondering if this may be causing the excessive smoking when I first start the motor after being sitting for a week or so. I am starting to seriously consider mixing my gas in the tank rather than through the VRO.

Re: VRO problem?

Unless the fuel already has a tint or you are premixing fuel/oil, the fuel at the filter (if the filter is between the fuel supply and the VRO pump) should be clear fuel.

In the past, VRO failures have allowed oil to backflow to the fuel supply, BUT it is more common that the VRO failure would allow gasoline to enter the oil tank.... so check the oil tank for a gasoline odor/mix.

Perhaps a time to consider rebuilding the VRO?

Re: VRO problem?

I was thinking of bypassing the VRO because I found the engine smoked a bit too much but if the VRO needs to overhauled/replace I think I will do this now. VRO's are expensive from what I've seen.
