VRO pump clatter?

On my '88 60hp evinrude that is finally running at full speed, there is a noticeable ticky clatter type sound that only is apparent above about 2200 rpms and speeds up the faster you go. The VRO is disconnected and I am premixing, is it possible this noise is from the VRO pump still working but running dry since it is disconnected? I checked the plugs and compression after discovering this yesterday and that all checks out. Thanks! I just don't wanna blow up another engine!

Well I don't, but I'm trying to figure out if that's what it is or could be, or if there's other things I should be looking for to make sure I'm not destroying the engine. I mean it makes sense the VRO piston would be noisy with no oil going over it any longer?

Was the oil line capped? It needs a short length of oil line connected and a plastic plug to seal it.

Yes it is. I did find a thread over on the hull truth that someone talks about this as well. Seemed some people had the noise until they replaced the VRO pump with just a fuel pump, I'll probably go ahead and put a standard pump on since I have no idea why the original engine owner disconnected the VRO in the first place. The engine seems to run flawless now other than this noise. I'm going to do the joe reeves piston play check tonight just to make sure.

Oil side of the VRO is electric. So, If the electrical connection is unhooked it can't be the oil side of the VRO making the noise.

Something I do when trying to diagnose a noise is use a short length of garden hose. With the motor running on muffs, cowling off, hold the hose to your ear and the other end to the engine. Move it around and try to isolate where the sound is coming from.

Re: VRO pump clatter?

I know plenty of people with VRO that work perfectly fine, but since I got the motor with it already bypassed I am not going to risk using it. This is a great writeup on the system.

It also does not appear the oil pump is electric, only the no oil flow sensor?
