spoke to a cert mech and he said that he routinly replaces these pumps every 12 to 16 months ( I have a 1994 200 hp evinrude ) Had a new pump installed in 1999. I can't get t  he pump to stop dumping oil. I probably run around 25:1 mix. I have checked everything Air leaks in the fuel side, Dirty screens in the oil tank, obstructed anti-syphon valve in the fuel tank. How do I check to see if the pump is just broke and is pumping an uneccessary amount of oil??

Re: vro pump

IF this "cert mech" is routinely replacing these pumps every 12-16 months, he's wasting his customers money. Granted units can experience problems, but $250 for a new pump every year and a half???

There are several tests which can be performed. One test is an oil consumption test, which will verify if it's correctly oiling. Keep in mind pumps built since 1996 oil at 50:1, they are no longer variable compared to the original 1994 pumps. Are you doing a direct gallons of fuel to gallons of oil used, or are you "guestimating" your oil consumption?? I only ask because of the oil ratio of the new pump...

Other tests include diaphragm and check valves and require removal of the pump from the engine. Most tests are outlined in the factory service manual (which the majority of dealer mechanics seem to lazy to bother doing) and one other test is listed in the 1999 Dealer Service Seminar Notebook.

-John

Re: vro pump

I wonder who certified the mechanic. Connect a 10 inch length of 1/4 inch clear vinyl hose to oil inlet nipple on pump,
mark hose about three inches in 1/2 inch increments, fill with oil, clear air. The pump should intake 1 inch of oil at 800 rpms in 5 pulses, and 1 inch of oil at full throttle in three pulses. You feel the pulses by holding finger on pump. You must mix 50/1 in tank for this test. these numbers are all approximately.
Check for air leak at vacuum switch.

Omc school at Sunrise, Floride 1989 were instructing that VRO2 in 88/89 was only pumping 50/1.

Re: vro pump

John, I was guessing on the amount of oil and gas consumed. I will try and check for vac leaks at the switch and I will try and do a consumption test.If the newer pumps inject at a ratio of 50:1, would I be better served just disconnecting and run gas pre-mix.I value your sugesstions, and thank you for your participation

Re: vro pump

Whether you disconnect and premix or retain the oil injection is up to you. I see no benefit of one over the other. Oil injection is certainly a nice convenience and when properly maintained (as anything else) usually give long reliable service. If you search around this iboats board, my opinion on the subject is well stated/known.

On the clear hose/oil consumption test, the spec for '96 & newer pumps is 3 inches in 6 to 8 pulses of the pump with engine running at 1500 rpm's.

Clanton - In school this year (Waukegan, IL) they're telling us the oiling rate changed in '96, e.z. way to remember = it's the same year they changed from the big-red connector to the Deutch connectors. Checked my notes - first pumps variable from 150:1 (idle) to 50:1 (WOT), pumps from 86/87 to 95 100:1 (idle) to 50:1 (WOT), '96 & up 50:1 all the time.

-John

Re: vro pump

John,

Must've been mid '96. I had an early 96 Ocean Runner 115 (60 degree), adn it came with the variable ratio pump. The replacement for it is the 50:1 pump.

Incidentally, I ran that motor hard for five years, and sold it to a friend. The original VRO pump is still functioning perfectly. Those things sure are stingy with the oil! Too bad they couldn't get it right. I always worried about that system, though. If you idled for a period of time, the floatbowls would end up filled with 100:1 mix. Then, if you punched it, you wouldn't get back to 50:1 until you used up everything in the bowls and fuel lines.

Re: vro pump

Tuxedo88, I have a 1994 Evinrude 225. I mix gas in tank. Sure makes me feel better knowing my engine is getting 50:1 all the time.

Good Luck
Doug

Beernutz,

Don't forget that the Merc engines do the same thing with a leaner fuel:eek:il mix in the carbs at idle with their oiling system, and all EFI motors (Merc and Yamaha) have even more fuel to burn up first in the vapor separator before a richer oil mixture arrives.
