2006 Yamaha F115. I have a racor 10 micron fuel/water separator installed and change it and the low pressure fuel pump filter regularily (every 100 hours or 1 year). Should the high pressure fuel pump filter in the VST be changed at regular intervals? If so how often? Only if problems? Thanks in advance.

Re: VST filter change frequency ???

hawilson2,

Yamaha recommends replacing the VST filter every 500 hours or 5 years. Don't wait until you have problems. The whole reason for changing it is to prevent problems from occurring. I have changed them more frequently and noticed debris at that time. I guess it all depends on the quality of fuel that is running through the system. If you do change it, remember to get a new VST o-ring gasket at the same time. Many times when the VST top is removed the gasket swells and it can't be reused. This happens most often if you're in an area that is forced to use E-10 fuels.

If you visit Yamaha's website you can view the entire maintenance schedule.

Good luck!

I assume by gasket you are referring to the part shown as #10? Thanks

Re: VST filter change frequency ???

Hi I just read your question about VST filter change . I been having problems with my 115 2003 4stroke. cant get the rpms past 3000 cleaned and checked everything even drained fual tank and cleaned it. the last thing to do would be to clean the Vapor Seperator Tank. Starts right up and runs fine until I give it full throtle

I want to know how hard it is to do it? The cost or hours a mecanhic would charge?
just a gesstamit would be apprecated.
If anybody knows thanks.

Re: VST filter change frequency ???

looks like you have to take off the intake silencer, throttle body, and intake manifold to access the VST. If you label all and are careful (maybe take pictures) as you disassemble you should just have to just reverse the process. I haven't done one yet but would to know others' thoughts about it as well. As always a shop maunal is recommended.

no no no no
DO NOT mess with the throttle body.
simply remove the air box then the intake manifold. then remove the VST from the manifold assy.
as far as the VST filter we find once a year or less depending on usage.

some we do twice a year, depends on how much reash is coming through.

Re: VST filter change frequency ???

Thought that may be the case but never having done one I was not sure if the throttle body and intake manifold could be removed as a unit.
As far as how often, I believe the maintenance schedule (http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard/2009_Maintenance_Charts.pdf) recommends every 500 hours or 5 years for the VST filter change. It does not mention once a year (~100 hours, I assume). Rodbolt, is that just a practical measure or is that recommended by Yamaha somewhere.

Re: VST filter change frequency ???

I have been getting some good info from everybody on Iboat forum.
Back to the vst filter change. it looks like the fual injectors also have to be removed to get to the vst on my 115 yamaha 4stroke.Is that right.
thanks

Re: VST filter change frequency ???

In mine, 2006 F115, it appears as if the fuel injector assembly is part of the intake manifold assembly. Remove the intake manifold assembly and the fuel injector assembly stays attached to the intake manifold assembly. All this is based on a picture I have attached from yamaha's web site page for the parts catalog (http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard/parts/home.aspx). I will let those who have already performed this task speak the truth.

Thanks again. I went to a yamaha cert. dealer today. He gave me a estamate for changeing vst 4 hours labor plus parts. filter 40.00, gaskits 30.00 each, total est, 450.00. Not sure if I want to try it myself.

I also own a 1997 225 johnson 2stroke over12 years old 560 hours . Runs great only repaced water pump and thermastats.never rebuilt carbs yet but I am going to first chance.I know how to work on it. Im starting to love it more and more.

Re: VST filter change frequency ???

VST filter on the F115 takes about 1.5 hours, 1 10 dollar clip that can be installed with CV boot clamp pliers, filter is cleanable usually.
if equipped the 10 micron inline filtere is about 50 dollars.
if the VST gasket isnt damaged or swollen it can be reused.
injectors stay put unless dirty.
manifold gasket,if you dont damage it on removal, is reusable.

4 hours for a VST filter ?
I can change the injectors and do the VST on an F225 in 2.5 hours.
F115 and F150 in less than 2 hrs.

Re: VST filter change frequency ???

good news for me guys. A buddy and I tackled the VST today and it took about two hours. I can't beleave how much yellow scalely crud was on that little screen filter. We just cleaned it with carb cleaner and put all the same parts back together. took to the river and the rpm went from 3000 to 5000 and speed from 22 mph to 35 mph.
not as big a job as I thaught. Dealer had me scared.
Thanks for all your input.

Re: VST filter change frequency ???

why take out the injectors for VST remova? if you remove the fuel rail dont drop or lose the little black plastic insulator behind the 10mm hex head bolt at the top of the rail.
