I tried the wakeskate for the first time saturday and now I have to have one. The one I rode did not have any fins on the bottom, obviously I cannot tell if it is easier or what the fins would actually do. I am looking at a used board on craigslist and it has fins on it front and back, as a novice what would the pro's recommend?

Also, the board I rode saturday had a type of padding where your feet go, the owner of the board said he wears shoes on it but they would not fit me. I rode it barefoot and it was a blast. The board that I am looking at on c'list says that shoes are not required. Is it easier with shoes?

I wear shoes. You will stick to the grip tape better. The fins help you "track" better and is great for beginners. If you want to do more spin tricks and are decent at staying up then get one with no fins. Personally, I liked the fins better when I was learning, and now I use the board w/o the fins.

Thanks for the reply.

Here's the board...
Hyperlite wakeskate scape 112

He's asking $80. I figure I will try it without shoes to see how good I can get. I assume the fins are removable?

It looks like the fins are removable. That one looks pretty cheap to me. Id get a better one. I "think" mine has a fiberglass core....

Re: Wakeskate

As a novice, would I be able to tell this is a cheap board. I think retail was around $100. I probably would not be doing big tricks, would I outgrow it quickly?

This board is 9 ply wood core, that does worry me a little. Do these get waterlogged?

Another thing is the bigger the board, the easier to learn. Smaller boards are more versatile for flip and spin tricks. If you have access to a good one, try it out. If not you'll have to make the call. You could always offer that guy $50 and if you dont like it upgrade.

I have skateboarded but the last time I fell off of one was about 20 years ago. The one I tried last saturday was similar to the one on c'list. I think I will try my luck if he takes $50.

Yeah that sounds like a good plan. They are a ton of fun. Only reason I asked about the skateboard is because the shapes of these boards affect the ride like that of a skateboard. More concave means better flips with a sacrifice of stability. Longer is more stable yet harder to manuever. The better you get, the more concave of a board you will want. :) P.S. landing kickflips on these things is SOOO HARD!!
